4 July – Ardfern

Rainy this morning, so we read, did laundry and blog, Dan walked up the hill again, and we generally soaked up the relaxation.  After lunch we drove to Ardfern… about six miles down the twisty turny A816 (considered the main road in the area) and then another six miles on single track, also with plenty of twists and turns, but at least one is going slowly (about 20 most of the time).  The scenery was such that one wouldn’t have wanted to zoom by anyway!
Our place is at blue dot; end of red line is where road stopped.
A rare straight stretch!
At the car park (through a farmer’s gate and further down the road), we stopped and stayed to enjoy the beauty.  Kathy modeled her Shetland wool (thanks Ms Frizz) shawl and the new Celtic design brooch she purchased at the Giving Tree shop.

Then she sketched and knitted while Dan hiked further down the peninsula.  My goal was to get to the tip, but the walking was extremely rough—boggy in places, rocky in most, no path other than bent over grass in places.  I got as far as the third of three huge mounds, climbed up it, and took photos.  Water, sailboats, islands (Jura across the water on the left), rocks and hills.  The rocks are heaved vertical in many places.  A beautiful place!

I was pretty fatigued when we headed home!  The Crafty Kitchen in Ardfern had just closed, the Galley of Lorne Inn hadn’t started serving yet, so we drove back to Craob Haven and ate at the Lord of the Isles Restaurant.  Chicken Fajita and Lamb Stew hit the spot, preceded by a wee dram of Caol Ila whiskey (from Islay).  A good day!
