13 July - Flights to Reykjavik and Minneapolis

Today we are going home!  We got to the airport about 10 a.m., after turning in our rental car.  The tire issue was no problem… “you did the best thing by replacing the tire with a like tire” (as if I had anything to do with that).  Iceland air check-in wasn’t even open yet, so we waited an hour at Starbucks.  Then went back, checked in, went through security (although Kathy beeped and had to be patted down, and they confiscated her very dangerous blunt end scissors while ignoring the very pointed scissors in her bag???), and headed to the Saga lounge since we were traveling First Class.  It was very nice, with plenty of food and complimentary booze.  Our flight from Glasgow to Keflavik Airport in Iceland here was very smooth.

Now I’m sitting in the gate area of Keflavik Airport in Iceland.  Kathy & I just settled down for an hour layover when the public address announced a list of names of people heading to USA… including mine (though the pronunciation was pretty garbled).  Turned out to be a TSA random security check of about 15 of us… I couldn’t let Kathy know so she was rather worried it was something about the tickets.  They took us upstairs, scanned the barcode on our boarding passes about 5 times, and then took me into a room with a 12 year old who had me empty pockets, take off shoes, stand on a box while she swiped my hands (top and bottom), ankle area, and waist pocket area.  Then… “thank you” and it was done.  Would sure like to know what it all accomplished and how doing that to pretty average looking people from 15 – 70+ made the flights safer.   (15 min later)--- They just called my name again… so K & I picked up all our bags and went to the service desk… oh oh… their mistake… sigh.

One of the things we’ve noticed at Keflavik Airport is the departure area is way too small for the number of people they are transporting.  There were practically no seats to be had and it was wall to wall people.  We haven’t had opportunity to get into the main part of the terminal the last several trips, so have lost our “gee what a nice airport” feeling.

On the brighter side, we somehow got first class tickets when we bought Economy Comfort, so we’ve been traveling 1st class today and this first class stuff is nice… within 5 minutes of boarding and getting seated we were handed glasses of champagne.  I could do this more often!   Lots of fancy treatment, hot towels, drinks, sound-proofing headphones, and plenty of checking in with us.  The meal was weird… pretty tasty, but I sure couldn’t name most of the things on the plate.

The trip to MSP was very smooth.  We were both pretty tired as it was about 12:15 when we landed.  We had to wait to get plane to terminal and then wait long time for luggage.  Taxi ride was direct and fast and we arrived at HIEX Roseville 1:45 a.m.  It didn’t take us long to get to bed!  We are very thankful to have been able to make this trip, and have no health issues.

Lupine grows wild at the airport... all over between runways.

Lots of fog at Keflavik, but runway lighted.
