I'm sitting at the window of our B&B, looking out at Loch
Fyne, the longest sea loch in Scotland, coming in from the Sound of Bute and
Firth of Clyde, extending 40 miles inland. Both are waters of the
Atlantic, just weaving around the Isle of Bute and other islands in the
Hebrides.
The afternoon has been grey with rain.
But we had a very nice ferry ride this morning with a beautiful sun
shining and plenty of blue water.
We got to Port Ellen early, so took a walk on
the local beach. Kathy found some sea
glass and Dan got a close look at a family of swans.
Then to the ferry terminal, where we had to wait for the ferry to arrive. Dan walked around, and saw this fellow unloading at the pier. That last one would sure make a good meal!
After the ferry ride we stopped in Tarbet for lunch, and then
took the drive northward that was more harrowing than nice... the bloody narrow,
curvy, hilly roads of Scotland loaded with big trucks that hog the middle line!
(That's how we got the wrecked tire last week.) But we are here
safely, a stop kind of mid-way from our Islay visit and the two night stay near
Glasgow. It would have been a very long drive on these kinds of roads to
do it all at once. The B&B is very nice.
Up the
road is one of those cool old bridges.
We had a good laugh Sunday night as we went to bed… it was
about 10:15, and as we settled in, it seemed I’d left the light on in an
adjacent bedroom because there was light shining brightly into the hall
area. I got up and looked, and it was
the light from the already set sun, shining now from cloud-free skies. We had a pretty good laugh about that… and
the a.m. version helps explain why we’ve been (and were this morning) awake at 5:00 a.m. and sometimes not able to go back to sleep.
Later: Tonight as we are sitting in our B&B reading, we looked out the window at beautiful Loch Fyne and it was indeed fine.... and we were very surprised to see a rainbow, and it was being reflected in the loch. Beautiful!
