24 June – Millhill, Deerness, Orkney

Whoa… some serious wind here on Deerness (a large area of southeast Orkney).  Weather BBC says gusts in the 40’s and up to 50 mph.  I finally tried going for a little walk and it was short!  Besides the wind the rain comes and goes and feels like a BB when it hits.  Kathy wanted me to get something from the car, and I pleaded with her to run after me if I went cartwheeling across the lawn.

So we are ensconced in the beautiful self-catering home we have for the week.  It must be only 2-3 years old as their first visitors signed in in 2015,  Everything is top of the line and very comfortable.  We are lucky to have found this.

The house sits near but not close to the North Sea (visible in the background).  Orkney is not very big… some of the sites we want to visit are on the NW coast and we are on the SE coast… it’s only 30 miles and about 45 minutes between.  Kirkwall, where we’ll go to church tomorrow is 18 miles and 35 minutes away.

We arrived earlier than expected last night, about 10:30.  Our TomTom took us right to the driveway—of the wrong place.  And we were so tired that when it said Millhouse Farm instead of Millhill we didn’t even notice… thankfully the farmer was still up and very pleasant and showed us where Millhill is.  Kathy didn’t want to go anywhere today… she’s been knitting and is now painting.  A restful day.
